Job Interview Tips - CNN on-line - March 30, 2005

Moving to Maryland and need to find a job?  Living in Maryland and looking for a new job?  A variety of on-line resources exist to assist you and are listed below.

Some thoughts on job hunting in Maryland:

  1. Keep an eye on the Baltimore Sun employment page.  You can search on-line (http://www.baltimoresun.com/) through their jobs link.
  2. Look at the Maryland Employment Information on the Maryland ACS website (http://mdchem.org).  There is a whole page on various Maryland companies & universities whose websites you can explore to determine whether they have jobs available.  The Maryland ACS does not typically have job listings on our website because these things come and go so quickly.  Universities often have a mixture of lab assistant jobs so it might be a good idea to think about calling up their offices and inquiring about lab research jobs.  Also, note that most Federal Government jobs can not be held by non-US citizens - so don't spend too much time with the government sites.
  3. If you are a member of the ACS, you can search on-line for jobs through the ACS on-line database (http://chemistry.org)
  4. Work with a recruiter/headhunter.  These people get paid by companies to find people to fill jobs.  A listing of recruiters/headhunters in Maryland can be found on-line (http://www.couponsweb.com/USA/index.htm).
  5. List your resume on (http://Monster.com).  Companies go to this website to search for people with certain qualifications.

For any of these options, you will have to have a resume ready.  If you do not have a resume, get moving and put one together!!  Make sure to have someone with some experience review it and make sure that things are grammatically correct.

It's always a good idea to use several of the above options to try to maximize your chances.  Many people/students send out 100+ resumes when they are looking to get a job and are happy to get a handful of job interviews... so you'll likely have to be persistent.
