The Maryland Local Section of the ACS accepted the responsibility to administer the George Braude Memorial Lecture starting with the initial presentation on October 23rd, 2003.
The wishes of the donor are that this should be an annual lecture on a scientific, yet broad, topic to attract the attention of the chemists of the local section. We are urged to select persons of significant status with care taken to assure that women appear among the speakers (at least once in three times was offered as a guide.) Besides covering the transportation and other costs for the speaker and the preparation of an appropriate award document, it is intended that the remainder of the $3,000 provided each year be given to the speaker, or sent to an appropriate place selected by the speaker, to assist in supporting chemical research.
The Braude Award does not solicit nominations from the ACS members. It is the purpose of the Section to appoint a selection committee to choose the speaker each year. Given the target date of October, this committee must be active early in the fall of the preceding year.
